The Australian Bookish Shop: Supporting People and Planet

There are so many charities working incredibly hard to make a difference to the lives of people and planet.

Founding my own charity in 2001 and managing this for 16 years, I know exactly how difficult it can be to survive, and, just how much of a difference each donation can make.

I worked as a social worker in family and community services for 15 years and then ran my own online counselling service for people with diabetes. I have a PhD in psychology, three beautiful sons, and I write books for children and young adults. I am passionate about the mental health and wellbeing of young people and doing everything we can to create a healthy and hopeful future.

The Australian Bookish Shop wants to make a difference. $1 from every order will be collected and the total split across our three selected charities each month.

In 2021 we have chosen initially to support The Indigenous Literacy Foundation, Sea Shepherd and ReachOut.

We are also offsetting our carbon for parcel deliveries with Greenfleet Australia.

The Indigenous Literacy Foundation

The ILF is a national book industry charity dedicated to lifting literacy levels in remote Indigenous communities, so all children across Australia have the same choices and opportunities.

The ILF is supported by the Australian Publishers Association, the Australian Booksellers Association, the Australian Society of Authors, and the Children’s Book Council of Australia. Its team of ambassadors, volunteers and staff receive no government support to run their core programs, which give away tens of thousands of new books annually, run literacy projects and organise major advocacy and fundraising events, including Indigenous Literacy Day.

ReachOut

ReachOut is the most accessed online mental health service for young people and their parents in Australia. Their trusted self-help information, peer-support program and referral tools save lives by helping young people be well and stay well. The information they offer parents makes it easier for them to help their teenagers, too.

ReachOut has been championing wider access to mental health support since they launched their online service more than 20 years ago. Everything they create is based on the latest evidence and is designed with experts, and young people or their parents. That’s why ReachOut is a trusted, relevant service that’s so easy to use.

Accessed by more than 2 million people in Australia each year, ReachOut is a free service that’s available anytime and pretty much anywhere.

Greenfleet

Greenfleet are a leading not-for-profit environmental organisation on a mission to protect our climate by restoring our forests.

They plant native biodiverse forests to capture carbon emissions and help fight the impacts of climate change.

Since 1997, they have planted over 9.6 million trees across over 500 forests in Australia and New Zealand.

Their forests address critical deforestation, absorb carbon emissions to protect our climate, improve water and soil quality, conserve biodiversity, and restore vital habitat for native wildlife. In addition, their forests are legally protected for up to 100 years through an on title agreement with the landowner.

By offsetting carbon emissions or donating to Greenfleet, you are taking practical climate action.

Together we can grow our forests and climate hope.
